Fairbanks is the Yukon Quest's start line for races on even number years. It's Alaska's second largest city. Fairbanks serves as the Northern region's transportation, education and supply center. It is home to both a US Army Post and an Air Force Base and its airport is a transpolar air commerce hub. The start line is just below the Cushman Street bridge on the Chena River which runs through the city's downtown. Fairbanks was named after the former vice-president Charles W. Fairbanks. The temperatures in winter can be under -50C and in summer +30C. It is home to the well-known University of Alaska.
