Scenario 8

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

It is -40 C (also -40 F) and you are stopped at night, preparing a snack of meat for your dogs. Using your hatchet, you are trying to chop the meat into 1/2 pound portions for the dogs, but it is hard to hold the meat with your big mitts on. You take your outer mitts off for a better grip on the meat. As you bring the hatchet down, your attention is diverted by your wheel dogs having a fight, and the next thing you know the hatchet is buried in the flesh of your hand between the thumb and the first finger - clear through to the chopping log. You stare stupidly at your hand as the pain comes, and then you pass out.

  • What do you do?
  • What would you do differently if you had that minute back again?
